You’re interested in an art mentorship. But you have questions.

And you’re serious about growing your art skills and like the thought of saving money on art school, while still investing in a worthwhile education.

Maybe you’ve considered finding an art teacher or even taking some classes. But you’ve heard about art mentoring and now you’re curious. What is it? What is it like? How does it work?

You’re in the right place!

Let’s get this out of the way first. Intensive art mentoring is not for the faint of heart. It’s preferrably for the highschool graduate or above. Someone who is deeply willing and ready to invest serious time and effort into building a solid foundation for their skills.

It’s a online program that will stretch you and challenge you.

So what is an art mentorship?

At Melissa Jacie it is a long distance relationship with a more advanced artist who will train and guide you in growing your skills.

This is different from a walk-in class or book. Not only will there be opportunity for customization towards your interests and needs as an artist, but you will also have ongoing access to your mentor throughout the week. No more “waiting until the next class” to get questions answered or receive a quick critique.

So, how could this look in a practical sense?

It partly depends on what is going to work best for you as the student. Art mentoring with me is similar to a “correspondence course”. Jsut a much more timely version than snailmail. Here’s a general guideline that we will then work from to create the best path forward for your creative journey.

FIRST FOCUS: YOUR WALK WITH GOD

Every week I will be sharing spiritual encouragement and direction via email or text or a combination of the two. This is a key component to becoming the artist God intends for you to become. Staying continually connected in a personal relationship with Him is paramount to being an effective artist.

SECOND FOCUS: INTENTIONAL LIVING

As we’ve talked about, being an artist goes beyond practicing one’s skills. It takes intentionality and purposeful planning within ones life to set up for success. Atmosphere and rhythms and life choices are a key component of cultivating an artistic practice.

Artists are often sensitive beings and living with a schedule that is too crowded or chaotic will adversely affect our abilities to create beautifully.

Through discussion by email we will work together to help you develop a lifestyle that embraces breathing space and purposeful opportunities for inspiration and rest.

THIRD FOCUS: SKILL BUILDING

When it comes to hands on artistic skill-building, every Monday, you will receive an email with a PDF sharing your assignments for the week. It may also include specific instruction, a video link or reference to a book or article as well as inspiration and encouragement.

During the week, you will have priority access to me for questions via email or text.

At the end of the week, you will submit your assignments through email and I will review them and share feedback by the following Monday morning.

Q&A

Potential questions you may have …

I’d like to learn oil painting. Can I do that in an art mentorship? Absolutely! Depending on your skill level that will be assessed at the beginning of a mentorship, I will create and send assignments that will help you dive into and grow your oil painting skills.

I’m interested in learning illustration skills. Can you help me with this? Yes! Illustration is a fun subject and knowing this is your goal will help me to structure your assignments towards developing your illustration skills. We will look into drawing, perspective, light and shadow and more!

I love this idea, but travel a lot. Is there a way to sign up for just certain weeks out of the semester? Yes! We can definitely work the training around your schedule.

I’m really not sure where I want to go as an artist or if an art mentorship would be a good fit for me. That’s totally okay! If you’re curious about a mentorship, but you’re not sure it’s a good fit, let’s chat! I’d be happy to ask you some deeper questions and discuss your life journey and interest in creativity. Together we can figure out if this is the best fit for you or if another kind of mentorship would be better!

I’m curious and have questions! How do I contact you? I’d love to chat with you. Simply email me at melissajacie@gmail.com.
