It was the kind of air that throbbed with all-things-autumn. Leaves, swathed in daubs of yellows, crismons, and opaque hues of burnt orange, flickered in joyful springs as each breeze passed.
Meredith’s hand tightened over her brother’s. The soulful call of geese wove a tapestry of melodic longing into the air above their heads. She could feel the changing of seasons. She could see the glimmering good-byes of summer. But as they walked along the simple pathway winding beside a large lake, her thoughts wandered to the cloudy vista above their heads.
“Silas,” Meredith tugged her brother’s hand and nodded towards the sky, “see the clouds?”
Her brother looked up, his voice thoughtful. “You know, Meredith. Those clouds remind me of the need to wait on God.”
Meredith squinted as the sun appeared, shining strong beams of autumn light. “What do you mean?”
“We can’t do anything about the weather–we just have to simply wait for good weather and rain. Some situations are like that. We can only wait on God. But in our waiting, if we look up, seeking Him in the waiting, we’ll have the opportunity to witness the beauty of His presence, just like we’re enjoying the beauty of these clouds.”
“It’s kind of like when we had that dry season.” Meredith admitted slowly. “I was so upset that I was always looking at the dust of the ground. But if I had looked up, I would’ve seen a lot of beauty. Maybe that’s why God has us wait sometimes …the silence can be a signal for us to draw closer to Him–to see Him and know Him better.
“I think you’re right.” Silas replied, turning to look up a nearby hill. “Shall we go up so that we can see the clouds better?”
“Yes,” Meredith smiled. “Everything looks so different the higher we go up.”
A shower of leaves swirled around the two figures as they began to mount, as though colorful butterflies were cheering them on.
And far, far above their heads, white pinnacles of opaque mist, soft and gentle as a morning breeze, rolled across a sea of glass-like blue.
