Would you like to improve your colored pencil work? Today’s post has two tips that can help move you forward!
1. Use a Circular Motion When Coloring
One way to color is to try to creating small, overlapping ovals with gentle pressure. Try starting slow, with a light touch. (Be sure to keep your pencil sharp too.) :)
2. Layer!
Layer, layer, layer …when you color slowly, with small ovals and keep your pressure light, start layering your colors. This is a great way to bring a prettier depth and feel to your coloring. If you want a certain flower to be pink, color it pink and then add in some other colors …maybe lightly add orange or add a pinkish-purple.
Do you have a favorite brand of colored pencils?

Thanks for sharing these tips with beginners, Melissa! I know that one of using a circular motion was a great discovery I made when watching a sample class on YouTube. It’s neat hearing you reinforce the helpfulness of that trick so I think I’m going to pass this along to my nieces. :)
Earlier on I would have said I didn’t like the look of colored pencils but since then I’ve seen a few artists do some nice work with them. So I decided to try it a bit and had fun.
I’ve tried Prismacolors so far which because of their softer lead, works better for blending (maybe I’ll be able to try Faber Castell someday). For my adult coloring books, I like to use Sargent Art watercolor pencils since I think they’re cheap brand? That lead of the watercolor pencil seems to be softer and blends nicer than just an ordinary colored pencil.
I love coloring flowers & sweets. :)
